《被遗忘的我们（War Mongrels）》背景设定在第二次世界大战欧洲战场的东线，此前鲜有游戏作品涉及此题材，东线战场无数关于勇气与战友情谊的动人故事未曾被大部分人所知晓。游戏剧情大量参考史实。玩家将扮演两名德意志国防军逃兵，体验他们从逃兵成长为反抗纳粹的游击队战士的历程。随着更多志同道合的新角色加入，他们的队伍也不断壮大。
故事最初，主人公们被迫卷入了由纳粹引发的国际冲突中。但他们很快觉醒，转而致力于抵抗纳粹势力的扩张。他们见证了战争的残酷，在很短的时间内便完成了从男孩到男人的转变，并找到了抗争的意义，那就是去阻止更多无意义的杀戮。在战争中，他们是一群被遗忘的人，他们背叛了“祖国”，但他们选择了人性。
游戏中每名角色都有自己的技能组合与长处，玩家要学会有效组合团队的优势，以在各种任务与变换的环境中智取敌人。潜入、扰乱、暗杀以及对周围环境的利用……这些都是玩家必须娴熟运用的主要技巧。游戏中也有丰富的火器可以使用，以帮助玩家完成任务目标。
所有英雄的目标都是拯救他人并尽力生存下来，我们的主人公们也一样。他们最初的目标是逃离战争，现在则要全力避免无辜人民的伤亡。
游戏除单人游玩之外还支持双人在线合作闯关，玩家可以邀请好友随时加入战局，为正义而战！
